Marine conveyance deals with cargo and also people. This includes the use of ships and other water vessels such as boats. It requires a good captain for the vessel to operate the right way throughout the period it will be on its voyage. A captain is the commander, the supervisor of the crew and oversees all the vessel activities. You need to be qualified enough to be a good water vessel captain. Illustrated below are some characteristics you should have to make a good marine transport captain.

Communication skills. A good ship commander must be able to communicate effectively. The communication made should be able to be transferred to the crew members and passengers on board clearly and in time. This allows the ship staff to perform their duties as required and in the right manner. This depends on the reliance of the captain to pass the information. The type of language used should also be good and one which can be understood clearly by everyone on board.

Critical thinking. As a commander, one is required to think critically before making decisions. Decisions made in this position are challenging and require careful thinking so as to come up with the best solutions. The use of logic and reasoning must be incorporated to enable critical thinking.

An exceptional leader. Any water vessel captain serves the position of the topmost leader inside that particular vessel. Their main role is to oversee the activities of the ship and to make sure that all that is to be done is completed. For them to deliver adequately in this position, they must have good leadership skills and this will contribute to a good delivery.

Physical fitness. Such a career requires a person who is physically fit to fit in its involving nature. It is such an active job which may involve long hours of standing as you supervise the activities taking place. It also involves daily tough duties for example when an engine fails. So, it will need a captain who is physically fit to move swiftly, assist where possible and at the same time carry out their normal daily duties without fail.

Team player. As the captain, you will be required to work with other persons. This includes the engineers and the others who help in the running of the ship. This requires much teamwork. You should also be friendly and open minded towards the other crew members so as to ensure unity among them.

Courage is also needed. It is only a person who is courageous enough can be able to serve in such a position. Everything about it requires courage. Decisions to be made involves courage. All the situations that you will face as a maritime transport captain require you to have the courage to face them so that you can be a winner.

Self-control is also required for the leader to focus well. As a captain, you should be able to control yourself regardless of the condition you are in. This calls for several things such as the avoidance of aggression towards the other crew members or passengers. Learn how to manage anger so as to avoid letting it out of control. This will improve the relationship between you and the other people.
