Peru has great history and a beautiful, scenic landscape that brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to its borders every year. One of its most popular attractions is the magnificent lost city of Machu Picchu which the Incas began building in the early fifteen hundreds. Opinions differ about its original purpose, but most agree that is was abandoned prior to completion because of the influx of disease and the ravages of war.

It became part of the jungle for hundred of years before an American born archaeologist discovered it in the early twentieth century. Since then visitors have been coming to this area in ever increasing numbers. They are awed by the Temple of the Sun, one of the region's most impressive landmarks. People love to tour the Sacred Valley where the Incas traded goods with each other instead of using currency.

These ancient people were dependent on the land for food. They created a terracing system that can still be seen today. The nutrient rich soil they needed had to come from the valley below. So the Machu Picchu residents hauled it all the way up the mountain to use it.

The irrigation system the Incas created here is also very ingenious. It seems that they had extremely advanced ideas for their time. Existing stonework also suggests that they understood how to build structures that would last through time.

Some of the most popular tours include hiking packages. These tours may last as little as two days or extend over a week long period. For those who are able, this may the best of all possible ways to really get an appreciation for the diversity of Inca culture and the region where it existed. Some choose to travel independently or in small private groups. If you are not a seasoned veteran of this area, you should probably take advantage of some local guides.

Not everyone who travels to Machu Picchu wants to spend all of their time hiking. For these visitors there will be plenty of local markets to stroll through where you can try to barter with the natives. You can try great restaurants and enjoy interesting galleries and museums.

Machu Picchu, Peru, and South America all have much to offer. They offer spectacular scenery, helpful friendly residents, and a unique history that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world.
