Getting Started On Marine Head Odor Removal

By Glenda Thompson

When things are decomposing they tend to release a foul stench. This is the same thing that happens in our sewers systems. In most cases, you will not notice because the holding tank is far from the house. When you are on a boat, however, this stench could make your life very uncomfortable. You will therefore, have to find a method which you can use to ensure permanent marine toilet odor control.

This stench can be cause by two things. The smell could be coming from your on board holding tank. This will travel up your hose and start filling up the room. To avoid this, you need to make sure you replace your hoses every four years, depending on the age of your vessel. To confirm that the stench is leaking from the hose, wipe it with a warm rug, then sniff the rug. If it stinks, you will need to replace it.

If you normally use sea water for your toilets, this could also be the problem. This water normally contains creatures which will die, and stink up your toilet. You can install filters, which will sieve the water and keep out the larger organisms. Alternatively, you could get a tank and fill it with fresh water. This is better option to use for flushing.

If the waste is properly aerated, it will generally not lead to any bad odors. This is because the bacteria which will be present, will be breaking down the waste and releasing methane and carbon dioxide. You can replace your holding tank with one which is modified, allowing for better ventilation of the waste. If this also fails, then you will have to directly deal with the waste in the holding tank.

The type of treatment method you choose, will depend on your budget and your preferences. If you want quick results, you can purchase a chemical treatment. This will be effective and will kill the bacteria while getting rid of the offensive smell. They are also cheap, but can be extremely toxic to use. In case you are not in a position to empty the tank, you can even find one which will dissolve the waste.

For less toxic options, you can go with the enzymatic, nitrate, or bio active treatments. The enzymatic option uses enzymes, to catalyze the breakdown of waste paper. This will need to be added to the tank often, and you need to make sure your tank is free from other chemicals. Nitrate treatment will also be used as often, but they work in a different way. It provides a source of nutrients for anaerobic bacteria, leading to the release of nitrogen which is odorless.

You can also add live oxygen dependent bacteria, to your tank. Over time, they will reproduce and colonize the tank. This method is convenient because you will need to add the treatment very few times. It is also allows you to save in the long run, although the initial expense is high.

Make sure you have enough facts before selecting any form of treatment. When used in the wrong quantities, they could be ineffective, or damage some parts of the boats. You can also choose to get a professional to help you with the selecting and administering of the treatment.
