About Northern Ontario Walleye Fishing

By Nancy Gardner

Different individuals will have differing scenes of going fishing walleye. Some individuals will prefer large numbers. Others are specific on sizes. Other fishermen feel better when they identify hot spots at rocky points or off shores. The act of catching one fish after the other in Northern Ontario walleye fishing is usually boring. Those who do this do not succeed in having a large catch.

During the spring, they choose to stay where there is a river current or closer to the shore. You can find them three to ten feet from the shores. In Canadian lakes, the fish that do not spawn in river do so at the shores. By the end of the fishing season, most of them are through with spawning. They will however hang around the places to protect the beds.

Once you have mounted the light jigs, be fast to catch them in the shores. Be aggressive to retrieve them because the fish are also aggressive this time. You will get better catch if you use bright colors such as chartreuse, yellow, red and white. Some of them will come there to feed. Others will be there because of bright colors. These colors tend to aggravate them. Most like white.

During the day and at early spring, fishermen mostly catch the smaller males. They can easily be found at the river beds. During the day, the big females go to the deeper waters. If you are really interested in their size and not the numbers, go fishing in the places where these fish were not spawning. Move deeper than fifteen feet. The bigger females prefer to be here.

As a fisherman, you ought to know the areas you will likely get a big hunt. When fishing during spring, do not forget to put on a small rapala. At this time, troll slowly along the line of the shore. Most of your catch will be around four feet inside. Again remember that they prefer red, chartreuse, fire tiger and blue colors.

If you will keep on trolling past a certain spot and hit them, then you should know that many of them are there. In that case, you can stop your boat and begin casing. Avoid trolling back and forth severally because this spooks the area and stops them from feeding. They will disappear from these points.

If you are that stubborn fisherman who is not ready to try anything new then you will not appreciate fishing in the north. You will believe that the south has better catch. The fishermen ought to know that during early spring; ninety five percent of these fish are shallower in the waters. During afternoons, the bigger females move deeper in order to protect themselves from the pikes and the scorching sun.

During periods of summer, they will go deeper. Some stay in the river mouths and in the layoff areas of rocks. Rock drops are their other favorite area. For the lakes with flat structure, they will tend to hide in thick weeds to get protection. At this time, the sun is hot. This is why they disappear from the shores.
