By Stella Gay

Ever since time immemorial man has engaged in harvesting for quite a number of reasons. They used them as food, to make clothing or for purposes of pride. The practice has remained with us even up to date because man still stalks the animals for the same reasons. A case scenario that has become quite popular is gator hunting in Louisiana.

One most notable thing is the fact that their hide is useful in the leather making industry. The items that are made from their hide are considered to be out of this world because of the perception with regards to quality. Therefore, anyone who makes purchases of items made from the leather is guaranteed to be satisfied.

Hunting in this place is not just done out of the blue. This is why there are rules and regulations that are meant to guide the potential hunter. First and foremost, they need to assure the authorities that they own the wetland areas which is to sustain the growth of the animal. This is done to ensure that they genuinely own the land in question.

Living in the area and its environs comes with some advantages. One of them is the fact that they can obtain the licenses cheaply as compared to nonresidents. While hunting as a sport, they may need a guide who will assist them to secure the area where they can be accessed. The guides also supervise them so that they do the right thing.

The activity may not be executed easily without the use of some equipment. These include firearms, bows and arrows, hooks and lines as well. In the case of fire arms, shot guns are not allowed because of the damage which they cause. Therefore, the wildlife and fisheries department have found hook and line to be the best method for harvesting.

The process involving the manufacture of the hide is quite cumbersome. This is why, the storage of the hide is to be taken into account. It is advisable to store them in a cool and dry environment so that they do not get spoiled by contaminants such as the oil and gasoline. The hide is so delicate that it can lose their value if stored improperly.

The wildlife and fisheries department has a calendar through which they use to inform the potential hunters on which season they can make use of best. This is why they designated the fist Wednesday on the month of September as the best time for harvesting. First of all, they need to acquire CITES tags which acts as proof of licensing. Without this, anyone who is found to be harvesting without the tag may face prosecution.

In a nut shell, we need to embrace the idea that comes with alligator harvesting because it has been with us for a long time. Anyone who is interested needs to obtain licenses from the relevant authority and concentrate on enjoying the activity.
