Enjoyable Whale Watching Tours In Alaska

By Lelia Hall

Thousands of locals and tourists climb aboard catamarans and boats hoping to see the largest and majestic animals on earth. Various types of whales come to feed and play about twenty miles off the coast of Alaska.

It cannot be denied that it is a very thrilling experience to see them in their natural habitat. According to those who experienced it, it was an experience they will never forget. Whether or not the whales will come to play during their trip, no one can really control this. However, it is still possible for their whale watching tours in Alaska to be enjoyable.

Regardless if you have the tendency to get sea sick or not, it is best that you take medication. Since the Alaskan coast can get very rough, even seasoned sea-goers can even get sick very badly too. Prior to your scheduled trip, it is best that you take one several hours earlier and bring some with you. The trips basically last for 3 to 4 hours and it would not be pleasant at all if you get sick.

They should bring some drinks and snacks. It will definitely help them feel better by eating regularly. By doing so, they can avoid missing sightings or standing in long lines just to buy snacks on board. To get good seats, it is advisable to stand in line and get there thirty to forty-five minutes early. This is an excellent way to make sure that they get great seats for comfort and viewing especially that these tours are usually very crowded. The front of the boat or the top deck is a great place.

Before they go, they should check whether there is fog or not and the height of the seas. There is a greater chance for them to get sick if the seas are rough and are as high as five to ten feet. It is possible that they will not see the whales especially if it is foggy. The best thing for them to do is have the trip rescheduled.

It is advisable for them to dress warm. At first, it may seem humid on shore, but they should remember that the temperature can be as low as forty degrees especially when they are out to sea. They will feel even colder because of the chilly wind from a fast moving boat. They will realize later on that it is best to dress warm.

They should also bring a windbreaker, several layers of sweatshirts, a jacket, gloves and winter hats. In addition, they should remember to bring a scarf. Of course, they should not forget to bring their video camera, binoculars and camera. These will allow them to capture lighthouses, seals, puffins, porpoises, whales and more.

Last, but not the least, they should choose a company that offers another trip in case there are no sightings. It cannot be denied that there are no guarantees especially that they are dealing with Mother Nature. Even if they may not see whales, the experience can still be fun and relaxing considering the scenery they will get to see.
