The Best Camping In Colorado

By Ines Flores

Spending a vacation roughing it in the woods or in any other wilderness area is an adventure that appeals to much of the American population. Some people camp out in tents while others bring trailers or have camper shells installed on their pickups. Regardless of your chosen method of habitat you can find some of this country's best camping in Colorado.

With year round camp sites available most locations offer a wide variety of amenities for their guests. Most offer not only lots for those with campers, trailers, and RVs but areas for those who prefer using tents. Many have on site laundry rooms and shower areas for guest convenience. Picnic areas complete with bar-b-ques and fire pits are available in the warmer months of the year and during colder months you may find a kitchen area for cooking and serving meals.

In addition to these things you can look forward to visiting specific areas of this state. Many offer high desert activities such as cross country skiing, equestrian trails and visits to archaeological digs. Here you will be able to follow in the footprints of dinosaurs and hike the trails they used while migrating to and from feeding zones.

The rivers and the canyons created by the rivers are monuments to the power of water and expose the history of earth in the layers of soil from different eras of evolution. They also create white water rafting opportunities for more adventurous campers. Leisurely rafting cruises and fishing are also very popular activities for river areas. Favorite fish species in the rivers include pike and trout that many times approach record weight and size.

There are numerous lakes and rivers that help create areas that house the nearly four thousand camp sites in this state. The lakes will provide you with canoe rides over glassy waters and views of Mount Evans and the highest peaks of the Rocky Mountains. You will find over ninety three miles of sandy beaches on the Gunnison River banks providing wilderness camping and water sports of every nature.

Some more commercial camp areas offer community kitchens for public use that include cooking utensils, dishes and complete kitchen appliance availability. Showers and laundry facilities are also provided for their guests. There are complete hookups for those who have recreational vehicles and some sites offer weekly and monthly discount rates for these customers.

While touring the wild lands that have camp areas available you can schedule guided tours of cabins belonging to early American legends who lived here. Wild Bill McKinney's cabin is one site and the location of one of Quantrill's Raiders hideouts is another historic site available for touring. There are also tours of the remnants of the original Santa Fe Trail that brought settlers to the wild west for homesteading ranches and farms.

If you want to plan a vacation that is family friendly and will allow you to bring your pet along with you the camping opportunities available in this state offer the perfect answer for your situation.
