Getting From Laos To Cambodia

By Jonny Blair

There are a load of different ways to get from Laos to Cambodia so this post will concentrate on the one in southern Laos near the resort of Don Det. From there you can cross between Nong Nok Khieng and Trapaing Kreal and enter Cambodia. A few travel tips and money savers are revealed here. []

There are lots of buses available to book in Don Det and Don Khong. Shop around and book your bus!

When you go to Cambodia from Laos what do you need?

- Your valid passport

- A passport photo (carry two just in case, I always carry them)

- $27 US Dollars (the cheapest you could get it for in 2012)

- Complete all the forms

Sorting out your Cambodian Visa:

The best advice is to do things yourself - don't let the bus drivers or tour guides take extra unnecessary money off you. Laos and Cambodia are cheap but you can save even more money by paying for the visa yourself. They will give you the forms to fill in at Ban Nakasang - do that and get ready for Cambodia.

How much does it cost to leave Laos?

It's supposed to be free and normally it will be especially if you are Lao or Cambodian. For tourists they try to charge you $2 US dollars at weekends for overtime. I ended up having to pay it after an hour of arguing and you might have to too.

On the weekend the corrupt Laos officials will try and charge you $2 US this is only on Saturday and Sunday so try and avoid those days and you'll already have saved $2.

How do you get across the border between Laos and Cambodia?

It's a very short walk from the Laos border point across the road and bridge into Cambodia - an easy walk to do and suddenly all you need to do is get your visa. Pay them $25 at the booth, get the visa and on you go into the Kingdom of Cambodia!

You are now in a place known as Trapeang Kreal.

Trapaing Kreal is just the border village that you arrive into. There's really nothing much there to see or do and you may have a delay waiting on your bus but don't worry. There is cheap beer and food to enjoy!

After arriving in Cambodia at Trapaing Kreal you may have to wait for a few hours for your onward bus so just relax. Time to admire your visa, read your guidebook and have a beer and some local food before your onward journey. The bus down south to Phnom Penh could take up to 12 hours but you'll love it.

The total cost to get from Laos into Cambodia:

$27 US Dollars ($2 US to leave Laos, $25 for the Cambodian Visa. The cheapest price you can get it for is $25.
